What is a change of status to B-2 tourist?

A change of status allows certain people within the United States to request a move from their current immigration status to the temporary B-2 visitor classification. The application is typically filed with USCIS using Form I-539. B-2 status can be used for a temporary stay related to tourism, family visits, medical care, or other permitted personal reasons. Approval of a change of status does not place a new visa in the passport. It changes the person's immigration classification while they remain inside the United States.
