What Documents You Need Before Starting Any Immigration Process

Before scheduling an appointment or submitting a form, most immigration processes ask for the same basic group of documents. Having them ready from the start avoids delays and requests for additional evidence.

Identity documents

  • Valid passport (check the expiration date well in advance).
  • National ID or equivalent.
  • Birth certificate, when the process requires it.

Supporting documents

  • Recent proof of address.
  • Documents supporting your current immigration status (prior visas, permits, entry stamps).
  • Passport-style photos according to the form’s specifications.

Translations

Any document not in English generally needs to be submitted with a certified translation. Check this requirement for each form, since not every process asks for it the same way.

Before submitting any application

Organize your documents in a folder, in the order you’ll need them, and check that none are expired. If you’re unsure what applies to your specific case, at Visa Express we can help you review your document checklist before you submit your application.

Do I need to translate my documents?

It depends on the process and the document's original language. In general, any document not in English must be submitted with a certified translation.

What happens if I'm missing a document?

Each process has its own list of requirements. Before submitting your application, it's good practice to carefully review the specific checklist for your case.
